The Giver is a dystopian film based on the novel of the same name by Lois Lowry. In the story, a society was reformed into a supposed utopia after an unknown disaster. Citizens must take injections every morning to suppress their emotions, and teenagers have their careers chosen for them by a council of elders. Like every interesting utopia, this community is only perfect from the outside. Jonas is chosen to become the next “Receiver of Memory.” In his training, he gains memories of the old world so that he can advise the elders and help them avoid another disaster. However, the rebellious teenager decides that everyone should have access to these memories and eventually sets out on a mission to unleash them.
