It’s been quite a few weeks since I last watched a whole anime season in two days, but when I started watching Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba one Thursday afternoon after a full day of classes, I just didn’t feel like stopping and finished it the Friday evening after. It was a fun a-bit-more-than-24 hours ride with surprisingly a handful of emotional moments, but when it finished, I realized I’ll likely forget all about this anime when I start my next one.
Demon Slayer’s core story revolves around a rural boy named Tanjiro Kamado. After staying over in town one night, he returns home to the mountains to find his family massacred. The sole survivor, his sister named Nezuko, has transformed into a demon. Vowing to find the cure to turn her back into a human, Tanjiro sets off on a journey to hunt down Muzan Kibutsuji, the demon responsible for the destruction of his family, who is also the most powerful demon because he is the original demon. He trains with a master, passes the Final Selection, and joins the ranks of the Demon Slayer Corps.

Charmed (2018) is a reboot of the original urban fantasy television series that aired from 1998 until 2006. The premise is similar: three sisters dubbed The Charmed Ones are tasked to save humans from demons and other dark forces. This reboot features Mel Vera, Maggie Vera, and Macy Vaughn. Their mother, Marisol Vera, raised Mel and Maggie together without knowledge of magic while Macy Vaughn was raised in secret by her father. After Marisol dies in what appears to be a freak accident, Mel and Maggie reunite with their long-lost sister and encounter Harry Greenwood, the Whitelighter assigned to guide them through their newfound magical identity. Along with the usual power of witches, each of the sisters develop a special ability. Mel is a time witch, Maggie is an empath, and Macy is a telekinetic. When united, they control a shared special ability which gives them the edge over almost all enemies: The Power of Three.
As an avid fan of fantasy fiction, I was thrilled to see The Witcher appear on my Netflix homepage. I grew up on classics like The Lord of The Rings and have probably rewatched The Hobbit more times than any other movie. Game of Thrones wasn’t exactly my cup of tea, so I’ve been yearning for another big budget fantasy fiction adaption for years. Unfortunately, despite high praise for the series, The Witcher disappointed me beyond belief.
Adapted from the books by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher begins as the empire of Nilfgaard begins to conquer territory and disrupt peace in the Continent. As it usually happens in these stories, three unlikely heroes rise: Geralt, Yennefer, and Cirilla. Season 1 covers their personal journeys as they are pulled together by fate, presumably to pit them in a fight against Nilfgaard in future seasons. |
