Further explaining how the Annabelle doll first became possessed by a demon, Annabelle: Creation is a prequel to the first Annabelle movie and the fourth installment of The Conjuring series. Years ago, a doll-maker and his wife had their daughter killed by a driver. Heartbroken, they eventually decide to turn their house into a small orphanage and take in a group of six girls and their caretaker, Sister Charlotte. Of course, their house turns out to be haunted by some malevolent entity.
Please note: The Silenced is a mystery horror film, and this review discusses the basic plot. I’ve ranted multiple times about the conditions at my boarding school, but at least I’m not a part of a government-run experiment. The Silenced is originally named Gyeongseong School: The Lost Girls, and I’m not sure what relevance the English name has. For some reason, the film’s vague synopsis on Netflix made me think I was expecting a ghost story. Well, it’s not. Personally I like knowing at least the basic plot before committing two hours of my life.
It’s set in 1938. Shizuko suffers from an unnamed illness, causing her to cough up blood. Not wanting to deal with their sick daughter, her parents ship her off to a girl’s boarding school outside of Japan-occupied Seoul. A bed opened up after a student mysteriously disappeared a few nights before. The teachers insisted that the girl’s parents simply “picked her up late last night,” but eventually more girls disappear with the same excuse, and their friends become suspicious. After Shizuko witnesses some of their final moments, the school’s secret starts to unravel. |
